Dubai Statistics Center: Increase in Furniture, Furnishing, Residency and Fuel

4.28% Inflation Increase in Dubai till the Third Quarter

 

The report issued by Dubai Statistics Center (DSC) yesterday showed a record increase in consumer prices at the rate of 4.28%, till the third quarter of 2015, compared to the same period of 2014. This came as the result of the increase in the prices of the group of furniture, furnishing and home appliances and their maintenance by 8.08%.   This group represents 3.34% of the relative importance of the consumer basket. The prices of residency, water, electricity, gas and fuel group increased by 7.25%. This group is considered the highest as regards relative importance in the consumer basket, at 43.70%.

Also, the prices of the tobacco group increased by 6.68%, as its importance rate in the consumer basket amounted to 0.24%. The prices of the clothes and footwear group increased by 6.41%, as its relative importance amounted to 5.52% and the group of miscellaneous goods and services showed an increase of 2.85% and its relative importance amounted to 6.15%. School fees impacted the increase in the prices of education group by 2.64% and its relative importance is 4.09% of the total consumer basket. Also, the prices of restaurant and hotel group increase by 2.47% and its relative importance is 5.48%.

Transport and Health

The prices of the transport group recorded an increase of 2.23% and its relative importance is 9.08%. Also, the prices of the communications group increased by 1%, noting that its relative importance is 6%. The prices of the health group increased by 0.60% and its relative importance is 1.08% of the total consumer basket. The index recorded an increase in the price of the group of food and non-alcoholic drinks by 0.54%, as its relevant importance is 11.08% of the total consumer basket.

The index of the price of goods in the group of entertainment and culture decreased by 0.19%, where its relevant importance represents 4.24% of the total consumer basket. The most prominent developments of the different groups were as follows:

Food and drinks: The inflation index for this group increased by 0.54%, due to the increase in the price of foods that are not classified under another category, such as flavors and pickles, at 2.97%. Also, the increase in the price of meat by 2.21% led to the increase in the group's index. The price of bread, grains and their products affected the index, as they increased by 1.95%.

Clothes and footwear: The group increased by 6.41%, as ready-made clothes was the highest to increase, by 8.58%. The group was also affected by the increase in the prices of shoes and footwear by 2.80%. Also, the prices of cloths increased by 2.03%, which led to this increase in the index.

Residency, water, electricity, gas and fuel: The index increased by 7.25%, which was the result of the increase in the rents paid by tenants by 8.86%. Also, the slight increase in the price of electricity by 0.10% had its effect on the increase of the index of the group.

Furniture and furnishing, home appliances and their repair: the price increase of goods and services in the group of furniture, furnishing, home appliances and their repair, led to an increase in the inflation index by 8.08%. The index increased in that way due to the increase in the prices of small home electrical appliances by 17.11%, while the prices of home services increased by 15.37% due to the increase in workforce wages. Also, home non-durable goods increased by 0.98%.

Health: The inflation index for the health group showed an increase by 0.60%, due to the increase in the price of medical products by 3.53%. Also, the cost of medical analyses and radiation led to the increase of the index due to its increase by 2.98% and also the hospital service prices increased by 2.26%.

Communications: The inflation rate in this group reached 1%, due to the increase in the mail service costs by 7.19%, after Emirates Mail increased the rent of post office boxes for individuals since December. Also, the prices of telecommunications by 1.12%.

Fuel Price Liberation

The Transport group witnessed an increase in the inflation index by 2.23%, due to the increase in the prices of land transport by 13.47, after the decree of the Roads and Transport Authority concerning the new tariff for rental cars in trips inside the emirate since December 2014. Also, the prices of fuels and oils for means of transportation increased by 3.37% due to the liberation of fuel prices in the UAE since August 2015. Also, the prices of spare parts and accessories for means of transportation increased by 2.58%.
